A very solid Haints album! It has all the right fixings with a bit of extra trim that's always surprising. This is some of their earlier work, preceding their more publicised albums "Ghost Dance" and "To Win or To Lose". If you don't know the Haints, I highly recommend them.

This album is a MUST HEAR. Great group of kids from Nashville, TN. Banjo, washboard, guitar, mandolin, washtub bass... what's not to love in a traveling, street performing folk punk band with heavy old-timey influence? Photo and album courtesy of Heart Full of Napalm. They have a new album out as well; details on how to order are on their website.

Ива Нова - S/T

The Russian incarnation of folk-punk is much different than the American styles, so even though these girls kick ass, they may not be the type of folk-punk you are used to. Their sound is similar to their former band, Бабслэй, but Ива Нова (Iva Nova) is more produced and has a more serious sound. Again, this album may be pretty different than what you're used to, but it's fairly fantastic!

Бабслэй - Елдырина слобода

Very interesting all women folk-punk band from Russia. I've learned that Russian incarnations of folk-punk are very, very different than American incarnations, as these girls sound like a mixture of Gogol Bordello, Bjork, and a kind of World/Inferno Friendship Society circus-esque music style. I'm pretty sure that the story goes that they broke up and a few of them reformed into Iva Nova (Ива Нова). Note that I may not have rewritten the track names correctly from their English-phonetic spelling, so any of you Russian-speakers out there want to make any spelling corrections, by all means please do :)

Erik Petersen - Bellingham & Philadelphia

I don't have the portion of this album featuring Robert Blake, sorry. It's only half of a split. Erik Petersen is the lead vocals and guitar in Mischief Brew. Here's his solo work. Straight folk punk, right off the rails.

If you have the full album, you should let me know :D

Mutiny - Rum Rebellion

Mutiny's debut album (which came out on cassette in '97), this album is an incredible listen. Cuts are rougher than in "Bodgy Tatts", and this one has more raw influences from Celtic, Jewish, "Pirate", and Folk music than "Bodgy Tatts". The band is fantastic!

Evil Robot Us' - In Song and Dance

Fantastic folk punk band! These kids are growing close to my heart. Like Mutiny, they feature a female/male singing duo. The man sounds a lot like the male singer in Witch Hunt, while the woman reminds me almost of the singer from The Moldy Peaches. Very wonderful album.

  3. Birth of Tragedy
  4. The Honesty in Rooftops
  5. Yer Parents Still Tie Yer Laces...

Mutiny - Bodgy Tatts

Australian "Folk" punk band, though their sound tends to change from song to song. Some sound like pirate sea shanties, others like Celtic melodies, and even more they can sound like Appalachian bluegrass/folk. Very talented bunch of folks; I'm falling in love pretty quickly!

Mischief Brew - Songs from Under the Sink

Folk punk band from the famous Erik Peterson. Straight off the train from Philadelphia. This album is different than most of theirs, as it more so resembles the 1960's protest songs from the U.S. Very acoustic, not as aggressive, but an absolutely wonderfully creative album.
