  10. I Never Will Be There
  11. If You Don't Keep Score You'll Never Lose
  12. Banshee's Wail
  13. Goodnight Irene
A very solid Haints album! It has all the right fixings with a bit of extra trim that's always surprising. This is some of their earlier work, preceding their more publicised albums "Ghost Dance" and "To Win or To Lose". If you don't know the Haints, I highly recommend them.

Photo and album courtesy of Heart Full of Napalm. They have a new album out as well; details on how to order are on their website.

Pronounced "Chernozyom"... I don't really know how to describe this band. They're sort of the closest thing I've found in the Russian punk scene to anarcho-punk, yet they maintain a very obscure, avant garde quality to them. I actually don't know what to call them... Indie doesn't exactly feel fitting, but neither do other genres.

I highly suggest giving track 13 a listen to. It's the song that really won my heart with this band (and to note it's not the original track 13 on the album... it's a cleaner version and maybe a newer version of the song). Also, thanks to AntiPunk for providing this album!

I've been trying to find this album for years now. I highly recommend it if you enjoy pirate shanties, folk music, or amusing music about pirates. Perhaps there is a certain level of irony in pirating their music...

Ива Нова - S/T

The Russian incarnation of folk-punk is much different than the American styles, so even though these girls kick ass, they may not be the type of folk-punk you are used to. Their sound is similar to their former band, Бабслэй, but Ива Нова (Iva Nova) is more produced and has a more serious sound. Again, this album may be pretty different than what you're used to, but it's fairly fantastic!

Бабслэй - Елдырина слобода

Very interesting all women folk-punk band from Russia. I've learned that Russian incarnations of folk-punk are very, very different than American incarnations, as these girls sound like a mixture of Gogol Bordello, Bjork, and a kind of World/Inferno Friendship Society circus-esque music style. I'm pretty sure that the story goes that they broke up and a few of them reformed into Iva Nova (Ива Нова). Note that I may not have rewritten the track names correctly from their English-phonetic spelling, so any of you Russian-speakers out there want to make any spelling corrections, by all means please do :)

Erik Petersen - Bellingham & Philadelphia

I don't have the portion of this album featuring Robert Blake, sorry. It's only half of a split. Erik Petersen is the lead vocals and guitar in Mischief Brew. Here's his solo work. Straight folk punk, right off the rails.

If you have the full album, you should let me know :D

Mutiny's debut album (which came out on cassette in '97), this album is an incredible listen. Cuts are rougher than in "Bodgy Tatts", and this one has more raw influences from Celtic, Jewish, "Pirate", and Folk music than "Bodgy Tatts". The band is fantastic!

Evil Robot Us' - In Song and Dance

Fantastic folk punk band! These kids are growing close to my heart. Like Mutiny, they feature a female/male singing duo. The man sounds a lot like the male singer in Witch Hunt, while the woman reminds me almost of the singer from The Moldy Peaches. Very wonderful album.

Mutiny - Bodgy Tatts

Australian "Folk" punk band, though their sound tends to change from song to song. Some sound like pirate sea shanties, others like Celtic melodies, and even more they can sound like Appalachian bluegrass/folk. Very talented bunch of folks; I'm falling in love pretty quickly!

The Orphans - Raise the Youth

The Orphans was Erik Peterson of Mischief Brew's early band. It's a little poppy, not too folksy, but I thought I'd throw it up anyways. I'm sure there are some people out there that would love to get their hands on this album :) Not a bad listen, but most of it is very different than both Erik Peterson's solo work and Mischief Brew's work. Reminded me a lot of my high school punk band, except they can actually play instruments are are more composed!

Puke - Back to the Stone Age

Freshly ripped, Puke are a legendary punk band whose sound seems very unique for their time (mid-late 1980's). This album is a must, and is incredible. If you don't know where to start, try out "Blod" or "Stig-Britt". I've seen this album up on a couple other sites (Punk Not Profit used to have their discography, and I shamelessly jacked their album art photo :D ), but it gets taken down a lot. If the link(s) don't work, let me know and I'll fix it.

  2. Sewage
Side B (System Shit)
  1. What Kind of Life
  2. Molded By Silence

From Denver, CO, the Clusterfux are the area's most legendary thrash/crust band. They put on an awesome show and have played with renowned bands like Phobia and MDC (my memory sucks and it may have been Hellbastard). You can find out more about them through Less Art Records in Golden, CO, or through the Blast-o-Mat in Denver.

Unfortunately I don't know much about System Shit, but I do look forward to seeing them play in/around Denver one of these days. *They're not a Denver band like I'd said, but rather they're from Vancouver. Sorry for the confusion!*
